Belinda Close

Belinda Close comes from a long of traditional Minjerribah women, my apical ancestor was Ngerie.

My family belong to the Gorenpul, Ngugi & Noonuccal clans of Quandamooka (Moreton Bay). I have lived on Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island) all my life, from One-Mile to Dunwich. I belong to the Salt Water Murris-Quandamooka Inc. Art Group, who are all descendants of the Quandamooka clans.

My inspiration comes from my Island, our old people, my family, our culture, the salt water lakes, marine life & plants. My interests are my family of eight, soon to be nine, (when I become a grandmother), spending week-ends together at the beaches, Back Beach, Amity, Point Look-out & Dunwich.

I was one of the last generations of children to grow up at One –Mile Settlement with the old people as they use to hunt the parrots the old way with sticks of copper wire, (we were allowed to watch but not be a part of), the bandicoot traps & other foods. I want my children to know & understand these stories that I learnt from the old people.

The stories I have painted were told to me by our Elders & families. Some are from my childhood about life growing up at One-mile, which is very different from today. I hope my stories from my paintings will live on for my children, grandchildren & future generations. I hope they will be proud of their heritage of Quandamooka.

Her artwork above illustrates the 2013 festival theme nature first. The nature first principle – recognising and looking after nature in its own right – underpins the way protected areas are managed in Queensland. The principle is at risk of being eroded. In discussion about this artwork Belinda comments that “Rare plants are connected to creeks, land and sand – all are protecting Country”.

Belinda Close’s public artwork can be seen at the Moreton Bay Research Station. Pictured here is Wobbygong and Spirit Spine. Also Judy Watson with Belinda Close, Nick Mitzevich and Jo Kaspari.
